Holiday scams happen more often than most people know about. Besides criminal, it is distressing when con artists take advantage of compassionate people and the holiday season.
Because holiday scams are so common place, the Attorney General of Texas has issued a summary with tips and advice for local shoppers. The Attorney General’s information speaks to issues of gifts card scams and online shopping schemes. It also refers to the rampant scam where scammers say that you have won a contest then ask for private information so you can collect.
Scammers are always watching for softhearted people and especially those in the giving spirit. So to enjoy the holidays, stay alert and remember some simple suggestions that can prevent you from becoming a victim of internet scams.
- Simply, hang up on unsolicited telephone offers
- Look for a secure website when ordering gifts online
- Ask questions before making a donation
Most of the tips may seem like no brainers, but they are necessary reminders for those that tend to feel too-too generous during the holidays. And that is clearly the reason the Attorney General put out this message— to many consumers become susceptible to holiday scams while in the holiday spirit.
